Usually, I ask three simple questions to them: 1. What is the happiest thing happened to you this year? 2. Are there any things made you regret or sad this year? 3. What is the expectation for next year? These questions serve as entry point for me to start the communication with them. I also used video to record their emotional reactions, which are often so real, so simple. The smiling appeared when they feel happy, frowning when they get angry, crying when they were sad, and shaking when they are afraid. The more people I filmedthe more I like to observe people in this way.
I think I create a secret space through images, that belongs only to me and people I filmed, they can throw out their social identity and be frank and honest to each other in this space. I even wanted to get that answer of “Who am I supposed to be” from those countless conversations...I’d like to reflect individual's emotion, map a certain and real history of this age ,and a group, even myself, through a long time record. We all lacks of one photo that make us feel real and emotional, and this picture will remind us：Youth is not far away.
